Sharing an apartment can be an interesting endeavor. Whether you’re sharing with strangers or friends you know well, being in such close quarters with other people can have its tense moments. Many disputes arise from mundane issues like clashing schedules or kitchen hygiene. Here are three ways you can make sharing an apartment a little easier.

Divided Bathrooms

If you and your apartment mate want to save some money on San Diego rentals but aren’t too sure about sharing a bathroom, look for a place with a divided bathroom. These have the toilet and shower in one room and the sinks in another. When you enter the bathroom, you see one to two sinks, plus another door; behind that door are the shower and toilet. These bathrooms are more convenient than having one regular bathroom because one roommate can use the shower, for example, while another takes care of tasks like brushing teeth.

Mini-Fridges

Unlike a lot of rentals in cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego rentals usually come with a refrigerator. But don’t overlook the value of having your own mini-refrigerator or freezer in your room. Free up space in the main refrigerator by keeping your sodas and other drinks in your room, or keep a few snacks like fruit around so you don’t bother your apartment mate if you need to get something to eat in the middle of the night. This also lets you keep items like opened ice cream containers away from your otherwise trustworthy apartment mate.

Door Locks

If you’re sharing an apartment with someone you don’t know well, or if your apartment mate has people over often, having a doorknob lock on each bedroom door can bring some peace of mind. Even if you know people aren’t deliberately going to enter your room, there’s always the chance that a guest might mistakenly open your door instead of your apartment mate’s door or the bathroom door. Just be sure to get permission from the building manager first, and give the manager an extra key for use in an emergency or if you lock yourself out.
